The Importance of a Multi-Vitamin

by

Vitamins are absolutely essential to good health, and each of the vitamins in “multi-vitamin” plays a wide variety of roles. Vitamin A, for example, helps develop and maintain bone and skin, improves vision, promotes growth and contributes to the proper functioning of the nervous and reproductive systems. The B vitamins have neuroprotective, anticarcinogenic and detoxifying effects, help maintain the metabolism, build red blood cells, and are responsible for increasing the production of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Vitamins C and E boost the performance of your immune system, and Vitamin K helps the body’s blood clot in wounded areas. Many of these vitamins are also powerful antioxidants that scavenge the body to deactivate a wide array of cell-damaging free radicals.

Some vitamins are water-soluble and are carried and stored throughout your body in water – as a result, these vitamins can be more easily lost as body fluids are depleted and must therefore be ingested daily. Other vitamins are fat-soluble and are transported and stored in your body’s adipose – because fat stores more effectively than water, it is less critical when the intake of these vitamins is interrupted than when water-soluble vitamin intake is interrupted.

Minerals also have a broad range of applications and play significant roles throughout your body. Iodine is vital to the function of the thyroid gland, Iron delivers oxygen to the body’s cells, and Zinc and Copper are components of important enzymes. Manganese helps your body process oxygen, Magnesium is significant for enzyme function, and Phosphorus is vital to the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s essential storehouse for energy. Calcium and Phosphorus build bones and teeth while Potassium helps muscles contract, maintains the fluid balance of cells, helps transmit messages through the body’s nerves, and keeps the kidneys and heart working properly.

How can a good multi-vitamin help my weight loss?  Lets start with the B vitamins.  These are important vitamins in terms of weight loss, and they are often known as the ‘stress’ vitamins. Vitamins B3 and B6 are especially important because they help to supply fuel to cells, which are then able to burn energy. Vitamin B6 together with zinc is necessary for the production of pancreatic enzymes which help you to digest food. If your digestion is good, you will be much more likely to use your food efficiently, instead of storing it as fat.  Vitamins B2, B3 and B6 are necessary for normal thyroid hormone function production, so any deficiencies in these can affect thyroid function and consequently affect metabolism. B3 is also a component of the glucose tolerance factor which is released every time your blood sugar rises. Vitamin B5 is involved in energy production and helps to control fat metabolism.  As you can see, the B vitamins as a group are important and the best way to get them is in a good multi-vitamin supplement with a B-complex.  Some minerals found in a multi-vitamin will aide in weightloss as well.  Chromium for example has been the most widely researched nutrient in relation to weight loss.  Chromium is needed for the metabolism of sugar and without it insulin is less effective in controlling blood sugar levels. This means that it is harder to burn off your food as fuel and more may be stored as fat. It also helps to control levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood. One study showed that people who took chromium over a ten-week period lost an average of 1.9kg (4.2lb) of fat while those who took a dummy tablet lost only 0.2kg (0.4lb).

Regardless of your goals a multi-vitamin is essential to your body’s overall health and functions that result in weightloss, muscle growth, and natural energy.
