How Strength Training Helped One Woman Hike Angels Landing

by

Kimberly has trained at No Limit Personal Training for about eight years. Her most recent accomplishment is hiking Angels Landing in Zion National Park, one of the hardest hikes in the United States, something she says she could not have done without the strength she built here.

Before finding No Limit, Kimberly had already tried several group fitness classes without success. She would stop going, try working out on her own, and never felt like she was getting a good enough workout. After going through four or five different programs, she finally found No Limit. As she puts it, “I finally found No Limit and I felt like home.”

Why Kimberly Decided To Make A Change

Kimberly’s search for the right fitness environment wasn’t about one specific goal. It was about finding a place that actually worked for her, after years of starting and stopping elsewhere. That persistence is what eventually led her to No Limit.

From her earliest days at No Limit, Kimberly felt welcomed. She describes always feeling at home when she walks in the door, a contrast to the disconnected experience she had cycling through other programs before.

What Helped Kimberly Succeed

Consistency over eight years built both Kimberly’s physical strength and her mental resilience. She credits the coaches and the friendships she’s built along the way, describing the coaching as amazing and the community as a source of genuine support. Training also became part of how she manages her anxiety day to day. As she puts it, “no matter my mood before, I’m always in a better mood once I leave here.”

Kimberly’s biggest recent accomplishment speaks for itself. Angels Landing involves climbing roughly 5,000 feet along 21 switchbacks, with thousand foot drop offs on both sides and sections where hikers hold onto chains to climb safely. She describes it as mentally and physically challenging, and credits her training at No Limit directly, saying she could not have done it without it.

Beyond the hike, Kimberly holds onto a deeper motivation that keeps her showing up. She says her daily why is remembering how she felt before losing weight and becoming healthy, and she never wants to go back to that version of herself.

Kimberly’s story is a reminder that finding the right fitness environment sometimes takes a few tries. She didn’t give up after her first few attempts elsewhere didn’t work out, and staying persistent is what eventually led her somewhere that did.

Why Strength Training Supports Mental Health and Anxiety Relief

Regular exercise, and strength training in particular, is widely associated with improvements in mood and anxiety management. Consistent training gives the body a healthy outlet for stress, and for many people, the structure and community of a training environment adds another layer of support beyond the physical workout itself.
Kimberly’s experience reflects this clearly. She describes training as something that helps her anxiety every day, and says she consistently leaves in a better mood than when she arrived, regardless of how she felt walking in. That consistency, paired with genuine community support, is often what allows the mental health benefits of training to compound over time, the same way her physical strength did over eight years.

How to start strength training safely as a beginner

Can strength training help with managing anxiety? Many people find that regular exercise, including strength training, supports better mood and helps manage anxiety day to day. Kimberly describes leaving every session in a better mood, regardless of how she felt when she arrived.

What kind of physical preparation does a hike like Angels Landing require? Hikes with steep elevation gain and technical sections, like Angels Landing’s 21 switchbacks and chain-assisted climbing, require significant upper body and core strength along with mental focus, which consistent strength training can help build over time.

What if previous fitness programs haven’t worked for me? It’s common to try a few different environments before finding the right fit. Kimberly went through several group fitness programs before finding a consistent, supportive environment at No Limit that finally worked for her.
