The #1 lie people believe about pain and strength

Pain is a part of life as you get older. But here’s the truth—you can be strong and live with pain, or you can be weak and still have pain. The choice is yours.

One of the things I’m most passionate about as a personal trainer in Orange County is helping people realize the power of strength training. It’s not just about building muscle or improving your appearance. Strength training boosts your metabolism, lowers the risk of heart disease and cancer, supports bone density, helps prevent muscle loss, and can even extend your lifespan.

What most people don’t know is that lifting weights can actually reduce chronic pain.

But every time someone tweaks something during a workout, there’s always someone saying they should stop training or avoid lifting entirely. That kind of thinking holds people back.

The human body is not fragile. It is incredibly adaptive. In fact, more than half of adults over 30 have bulging or herniated discs and feel no pain at all. Should they stop training just because of what a scan shows? Absolutely not.

If you’re dealing with real injury-related pain, modifications might be necessary. That could mean using lighter weights, adjusting the movement, or dialing down intensity. But the focus should always be rebuilding, not quitting. If it’s a bigger problem, seeing a physical therapist or the proper chiro would be a better option.

As a personal trainer in Orange County, I’ve seen too many people get discouraged by fear-based advice. Telling someone to avoid certain exercises forever only teaches them that their body is broken. It’s not. You can build strength at any age—even if you’re older or have dealt with injuries in the past.

Let’s stop spreading the idea that lifting is dangerous if you’re in pain. When done properly, strength training can be one of the best tools to manage and even eliminate pain.

You’re more resilient than you think. Strength is a choice.
